FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA (July 24, 2025) — An Arlington woman died Monday afternoon after being involved in a devastating five-vehicle chain-reaction crash on Interstate 495 in Fairfax County, Virginia, during the afternoon rush hour.
The fatal crash occurred at approximately 3:08 p.m. on the northbound lanes of I-495 near Braddock Road. The victim has been identified as Suzzane K. Colbert, 60, of Arlington, who was transported to an area hospital where she later died from her injuries.
According to Virginia State Police, the crash involved five vehicles: a Toyota Tacoma, a Scion XB driven by Colbert, a Honda Civic, a Ford F350, and a Nissan Rogue. The preliminary investigation indicates that the Toyota Tacoma was unable to avoid striking Colbert’s Scion XB, which had stopped in the right travel lane of the Express Lanes.
The initial collision occurred a short distance before the bollards that separate the general purpose lanes from the Express Lanes. Traffic was flowing at normal speeds at the time of the crash, according to Virginia State Police.
After the impact, the Tacoma rolled multiple times, leading to a chain-reaction crash that involved the Honda Civic, Ford F350, and Nissan Rogue. In addition to the fatality, one passenger was transported to a hospital with serious injuries, and two others were taken to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
All Express Lanes were shut down, along with all but one of the general-purpose lanes, causing massive traffic backups that extended 4 to 5 miles. The crash was cleared and all lanes reopened around 5:50 p.m., approximately three hours after the initial collision.
Interstate 495, commonly known as the Capital Beltway, is one of the busiest highways in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, carrying hundreds of thousands of vehicles daily. The Express Lanes, designed to ease congestion, can present unique challenges during high-traffic periods.
The section near Braddock Road where this crash occurred is a heavily traveled stretch that sees significant congestion during rush hours. The combination of high speeds, heavy traffic, and complex lane configurations can create dangerous conditions when unexpected stops occur.
Multi-vehicle chain-reaction crashes like this one are among the most serious types of highway accidents, often resulting in severe injuries or fatalities due to the multiple impacts and forces involved. Several factors contribute to these devastating incidents:
The Express Lanes system, while designed to improve traffic flow, requires heightened awareness from drivers due to limited entry and exit points and the potential for sudden traffic changes near bollard separations.
Virginia has implemented numerous safety measures on Interstate 495, including variable message signs, traffic cameras, and rapid incident response teams. However, the high volume of traffic and complex roadway design continue to present challenges for motorist safety.
When fatal accidents occur on Virginia highways, surviving family members may be entitled to pursue wrongful death claims under Virginia law. These claims can provide compensation for the loss of their loved ones and help families navigate the financial impact of such tragedies.
Multi-vehicle crashes present complex liability issues, as determining fault may involve analyzing the actions of multiple drivers and various contributing factors. The sequence of events, speeds involved, and individual driver responsibilities all play crucial roles in liability determinations.
The severity of injuries in chain-reaction crashes often results in substantial damages, including extensive medical expenses, lost income, and pain and suffering. Insurance coverage can become complicated when multiple vehicles and policies are involved, making experienced legal representation essential for protecting victims’ rights.
