What Is Gross Vehicle Weight Rating?

5 stars

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, commonly abbreviated GVWR, is the maximum total operating weight a vehicle manufacturer specifies for a vehicle. It generally includes the vehicle itself, passengers, fuel, cargo, and other loads carried by the vehicle. The GVWR is typically listed on the manufacturer’s certification label.

GVWR differs from a vehicle’s actual weight at a particular time and should not be confused with Gross Combined Weight Rating, which can account for the combined weight of a vehicle and trailer. GVWR is important in trucking and motor vehicle law because vehicle classifications, licensing requirements, commercial regulations, and safety rules may depend on weight ratings.

Exceeding a vehicle’s GVWR can affect braking, handling, tires, suspension, and overall safety. After a commercial vehicle accident, investigators may review the vehicle’s GVWR, cargo weight, loading records, and actual weight to determine whether overloading or a regulatory violation contributed to the crash.
