Frost on the Roads: Identifying the Dangers and Navigating Around Them

5 stars

Believe it or not, there’s plenty to love about the cold season. Road conditions, however, do not belong on that list of positives. With the end of summer construction comes a sudden increase in weather-based hazards that place even the most attentive drivers at risk. With a little awareness, however, it’s possible to navigate winter roads without finding yourself in harm’s way.

Ice Is Not the Only Danger

Winter drivers are well aware of the perils posed by black ice, but this is by no means the only cold-weather hazard that can make roads dangerous in the winter. Frost can also prove highly dangerous. It’s especially risky given how difficult it can be to spot.

Refreezing Hazards

A variety of circumstances can prompt frosty roads, but this problem is especially common during brief warm-ups following frozen conditions. As the roads warm gradually, a slight thaw may occur, followed by refreezing when the temperatures fall once again at night. This can prompt surprisingly slippery roads.

Issues With Visibility

Frost on windshields and windows can be just as dangerous as frost on the road. Many drivers are content to only clear a portion of the frost off their windshields. This dramatically decreases visibility, making drivers vulnerable to a variety of accidents.

No matter how much of a hurry you may be in, it’s important to take the time to fully clear off all windows and the entirety of your windshield to ensure you can see roads, signs, and other drivers clearly.

Regardless of the current weather conditions, you deserve to navigate safe roads free of negligent drivers. If, however, another driver’s reckless behavior has harmed you or the passengers in your vehicle, justice is well within reach.
