What Is Gross Vehicle Weight?

Gross vehicle weight is the actual total weight of a vehicle at a particular time, including the vehicle itself, passengers, fuel, cargo, and other items being carried. It differs from Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, or GVWR, which is the maximum operating weight established by the manufacturer. For commercial trucks, actual gross vehicle weight can be important because federal and state regulations restrict how much weight certain vehicles may carry and how that weight is distributed across axles. Excessive or improperly distributed weight can affect braking distance, steering, tire performance, and vehicle stability. In a truck accident investigation, weight tickets, bills of lading, cargo records, scale records, and vehicle specifications may be examined to determine whether the truck was overloaded. A violation does not automatically prove that excess weight caused a collision, but it can become important evidence when loading or vehicle control is relevant to the crash.
