What Is Gross Vehicle Weight Rating?

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, commonly abbreviated GVWR, is the maximum total operating weight that a vehicle manufacturer specifies for a vehicle. It generally includes the vehicle itself, passengers, fuel, cargo, and other load carried by the vehicle. GVWR is different from the vehicle’s actual weight at a particular moment and should not be confused with Gross Combined Weight Rating, which can include a vehicle and trailer combination. GVWR is important in trucking and motor vehicle law because vehicle classifications, licensing requirements, commercial regulations, and safety rules can depend on weight ratings. Overloading a vehicle beyond its rated capacity can affect braking, handling, tires, suspension, and overall safety.
