WASHINGTON, DC (July 13, 2025) — A 16-year-old boy died Saturday, July 12 after a stolen vehicle crashed on Interstate 295 in Washington, DC, prompting the arrest of two other occupants who fled the scene.

The crash occurred just after 9 p.m. on I-295 southbound near Suitland Parkway. Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to reports of a single-vehicle crash and found the teenage victim unconscious and not breathing inside the vehicle.

The victim has been identified as 16-year-old Rick Kearney. Despite efforts by emergency medical personnel, Kearney was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two other occupants of the vehicle—a 17-year-old boy and 20-year-old Joseph Wade—fled from the crash site but were arrested shortly after when police discovered the vehicle had been reported stolen, according to MPD.

Stolen Vehicle Crashes in the DC Area

Motor vehicle crashes involving stolen vehicles present unique dangers and often result in tragic outcomes. In the Washington, DC metropolitan area, law enforcement agencies regularly encounter situations where stolen vehicles are involved in serious accidents, particularly during late-night hours.

Understanding the circumstances that contribute to stolen vehicle crashes can help raise awareness about these preventable tragedies:

  • Inexperienced Drivers: Many stolen vehicle incidents involve young drivers who lack proper training and experience operating motor vehicles.
  • High-Risk Behavior: Individuals operating stolen vehicles often engage in reckless driving, speeding, and other dangerous behaviors while attempting to evade law enforcement.
  • Panic and Poor Decision-Making: The stress of operating a stolen vehicle can lead to poor judgment and dangerous driving decisions.
  • Lack of Safety Equipment: Stolen vehicle occupants frequently fail to use seatbelts and other safety equipment, increasing the risk of serious injury or death.
  • Nighttime Driving: Many stolen vehicle crashes occur during nighttime hours when visibility is reduced and driver fatigue is more common.
  • Fleeing Behavior: Occupants of stolen vehicles often flee crash scenes, delaying emergency medical response and potentially worsening outcomes.

Interstate 295 is a major transportation corridor in the Washington, DC area, connecting Maryland and Virginia through the District. The section near Suitland Parkway where this crash occurred carries significant traffic volumes and has been the site of multiple serious accidents over the years.
