PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, MD — 21-Year-Old Motorcyclist Killed in I-495 Crash with Commercial Vehicle

5 stars

PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, MD (August 24, 2025) — A 21-year-old man was killed Saturday evening when his motorcycle collided with a commercial motor vehicle on Interstate 495 in Prince George’s County, according to Maryland State Police.

The fatal crash occurred on August 23, 2025, at approximately 7:32 p.m. on southbound I-495 near the ramp to Saint Barnabas Road. Maryland State Police troopers from the Forestville and College Park barracks responded to reports of the collision involving a motorcycle and a commercial vehicle.

The victim has been identified as Camron Amirion Stroud, 21, of Upper Marlboro, Maryland. According to preliminary investigation findings, Stroud was driving a Suzuki motorcycle on southbound I-495 when he collided with a commercial motor vehicle traveling in the same direction.

The commercial vehicle driver remained at the scene following the collision. The extent of any injuries to the commercial vehicle occupants has not been disclosed at this time.

The crash prompted significant traffic disruptions on the Capital Beltway, with road closures lasting more than three hours as investigators worked to reconstruct the accident scene. Personnel from the Maryland State Highway Administration assisted with traffic control and managing the extensive detours.

The Maryland State Police Crash Team is leading the ongoing investigation to determine the exact circumstances that led to the fatal collision. The investigation remains active, and authorities have not yet released information about potential contributing factors.

Motorcycle Crashes on Maryland Highways

Motorcycle accidents on major highways like I-495 often result in fatalities due to the high speeds involved and the lack of protection for motorcycle riders compared to occupants of passenger vehicles and commercial trucks. The Capital Beltway sees heavy truck traffic throughout the day, creating additional hazards for motorcyclists.

Understanding the factors that contribute to fatal motorcycle crashes can help raise awareness about road safety:

  • Size and Weight Disparity: Commercial vehicles can weigh 80,000 pounds compared to motorcycles that typically weigh 400-700 pounds, creating devastating impact forces.
  • Visibility Issues: Motorcycles can be difficult for truck drivers to see, especially in blind spots around large commercial vehicles.
  • Speed Differentials: Different traveling speeds between motorcycles and commercial vehicles can contribute to rear-end collisions.
  • Lane Changes: Commercial vehicles require more time and space to change lanes safely, potentially creating conflicts with faster-moving motorcycles.
  • Following Distance: Motorcycles require greater following distances to stop safely, especially when traveling behind large commercial vehicles.
  • Weather Conditions: Rain, wind, and road surface conditions affect motorcycles more severely than larger vehicles.
  • Highway Traffic Patterns: Merge areas and construction zones on busy highways create additional risks for vulnerable road users.

Interstate 495, known as the Capital Beltway, is one of the busiest highways in the region and carries significant commercial truck traffic along with passenger vehicles. The area near Saint Barnabas Road serves multiple shopping centers and residential communities, making it a high-traffic zone throughout most days.

Maryland Wrongful Death Law for Motorcycle Accidents

When fatal motorcycle accidents occur in Maryland, surviving family members may be entitled to pursue wrongful death claims under Maryland law. These cases often involve complex liability determinations, particularly when commercial vehicles are involved.

Commercial motor vehicle operators are held to higher safety standards than regular drivers, including requirements for commercial driver’s licenses, regular vehicle inspections, hours-of-service compliance, and specialized training. When these standards are not met, it can form the basis for legal claims against both the driver and their employer.

Maryland follows a contributory negligence standard, which means that even slight fault by the motorcycle rider can potentially bar recovery of damages. However, experienced attorneys can investigate whether factors such as commercial vehicle maintenance, driver fatigue, distracted driving, or vehicle defects contributed to the accident.

Commercial vehicle accidents often involve multiple potentially liable parties, including the driver, trucking company, vehicle owner, cargo loaders, and maintenance providers. Insurance coverage for commercial vehicles is typically much higher than personal auto policies, but insurance companies often fight aggressively to minimize payouts.

The Maryland State Police Crash Team’s investigation will examine factors such as vehicle speeds, following distances, road conditions, commercial vehicle maintenance records, and driver compliance with federal regulations. This information becomes crucial in building wrongful death cases for families who have lost loved ones.
