Listeria monocytogenes infections are particularly harmful to people aged 65 and older, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms can include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. In pregnant women, Listeria can cause pregnancy loss, premature birth, or serious illness in newborns.
