Ford Recalls 1.5 Million More Cars Over Faulty Doors

U.S. automotive giant Ford has acceded to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s request to expand a recall of vehicles with faulty doors, reports USA Today. The defect involves doors that fly open when the vehicles are driven. Last month, the company issued the initial recall, and this month it has added 1.5 million more, an action that brings the number of total recalls to 2.4 million.

Consequently, Ford said its third-quarter earnings would be less than what they have calculated. They estimate the recall repairs will cost $640 billion. Therefore, the firm reduced its third-quarter profit from $10.8 to $10.2 billion.

The cause of the defective doors lies in a faulty part termed the pawl spring tab. It can break, and when this happens, the door fails to close properly. “A door that opens while driving increases the risk of injury,” Ford says in a statement. The company reported one accident and three injuries have occurred due to the malfunctioning doors.

This recall includes the 2014-2016 Ford Transit Connect, 2013-2015 Ford C-MAX and Ford Escape, 2015 Ford Mustang and Lincoln MKC and 2012-2015 Ford Focus. If you own one of the defective vehicles, the automaker will repair the door at no charge.
