How to Keep Track of Your Prescription Medications

5 stars

If you’re like many Americans, your day begins with a hot cup of coffee…and a handful of pills. A report from the journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings indicates that seven out of ten Americans rely on at least one prescription medication. Many others take several pills every day. Some maintain a complex regimen involving different drugs at different times, sometimes totaling five or more pills before the sun sets.

Keeping track of all these medications can prove difficult, even for the most conscientious among us. Poor medication management, however, could have devastating consequences. If you struggle with keeping track of your medications and knowing when to take them, these tips might help.

Use a Pill Organizer

A pill organizer can help you keep track of your many medications. If possible, organize all pills at the beginning of the week. Some pill organizers even label various times of the day to ensure you take each medication at the appropriate time.

Establish a Routine

If you’re fortunate enough to take all of your pills at once, set a specific time to complete this essential task. Some people prefer to take their pills with the first meal of the day, while others prefer taking medications after brushing their teeth or shortly before going to bed. Your decision may depend on whether you’re supposed to take your medications with food; when in doubt, consult with your doctor.

Make the Most of Your Smartphone

If you take different medications at different times throughout the day, set multiple alarms to ensure that you take the right medication at the right time. Medication management apps may also prove helpful. Favorites include Dosecast and Medisafe.
