Losing a loved one in any type of accident can be heartbreaking. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, unintentional injury deaths is the third major cause of death in the United States. In Virginia, there were 6,999 injury deaths in 2023, which is a decrease over 2022 numbers.
If your loved one dies unexpectedly in an accident, you may be able to file a wrongful death lawsuit. A wrongful death claim is a legal action brought against an individual, company, or entity responsible for someone’s death. Through a wrongful death lawsuit, the family could receive compensation for medical bills, lost wages, funeral and burial costs.
In Virginia, families have two years from the date of death to file a wrongful death claim when a loved one dies due to someone else’s actions. While dealing with legal matters may feel overwhelming during this time of grief, taking action within this timeframe is crucial. Early filing can help address the financial burdens that often accompany an unexpected loss, including funeral costs and outstanding medical expenses.
Navigating a wrongful death claim can be complex, but you don’t have to handle it alone. An experienced Virginia wrongful death attorney can provide essential guidance while respecting your need to grieve. They can help you understand your legal rights, manage deadlines, and pursue fair compensation for your family’s losses. Many attorneys offer free initial consultations to discuss your situation and explain your options without any obligation.
