MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD (July 7, 2025) — Two people died early Saturday morning in a head-on collision on Interstate 270 in Montgomery County, Maryland, forcing the closure of all northbound lanes for several hours.

The crash occurred just before 3 a.m. near Germantown Road on I-270 North. Maryland State Police have identified the deceased as Ashley Salazar, 25, of Clarksburg, and Jeremy De La Torre, 33, of Frederick, both Maryland residents.

All northbound lanes between exits 15A and 15B were closed immediately following the crash, causing significant traffic delays during the early morning hours. The roadway was reopened just before 7 a.m. after emergency responders cleared the scene.

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration and Montgomery County Police Department assisted at the scene. Maryland State Police continue to investigate the circumstances that led to the head-on collision.

Fatal Head-On Collisions in the DC Area

Head-on collisions are among the most deadly types of motor vehicle accidents, often resulting in catastrophic injuries or fatalities due to the combined impact forces of both vehicles. In the Washington, DC metropolitan area, busy highways like I-270 see frequent serious accidents, particularly during late-night and early morning hours.

Understanding the most frequent causes of fatal head-on collisions can help raise awareness about preventable tragedies:

  • Impaired Driving: Alcohol and drugs significantly impair judgment, reaction time, and coordination.
  • Distracted Driving: Using phones, adjusting entertainment systems, or any activity that takes attention away from the road can be deadly.
  • Wrong-Way Driving: Entering highways in the wrong direction, often due to confusion or impairment.
  • Aggressive Driving: Reckless behaviors like tailgating, weaving through traffic, or unsafe passing maneuvers.
  • Fatigue: Drowsy driving can be as dangerous as drunk driving, impairing reaction time and decision-making.
  • Weather Conditions: Rain, snow, ice, and fog contribute to fatal accidents when drivers fail to adjust accordingly.

Interstate 270 is a major commuter corridor connecting Montgomery County to Washington, DC, and carries heavy traffic volumes throughout the day. The section near Germantown Road where this crash occurred is a heavily traveled stretch that has seen multiple serious accidents over the years.

Maryland’s Wrongful Death Law

When fatal accidents occur in Maryland, surviving family members may be entitled to pursue wrongful death claims under Maryland law. These claims can provide compensation for the loss of their loved ones and help families during an incredibly difficult time.

Navigating the aftermath of a fatal car accident requires specialized legal knowledge. Insurance companies often attempt to minimize payouts, even in tragic circumstances involving head-on collisions and multiple fatalities.
