Highways and busy, heavily traveled thoroughfares, particularly those that run through Southern Maryland, are famed for being among the most dangerous sites in the nation for serious vehicle accidents. Far too many road accidents occur annually. According to the latest data from the Maryland Highway Safety Office, 577 fatal crashes in the state in 2023, the highest total in the last five years.
When drivers disobey traffic regulations or behave carelessly about the surrounding roads and streets, accidents of this kind can happen in the blink of an eye. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, driving while distracted by anything like a phone call or the radio, and driving at unsafely high speeds are all factors that might potentially lead to automobile accidents.
Every driver has a legal responsibility to operate their vehicle safely and avoid putting the lives of other drivers or bystanders in the area at risk or causing them harm. Unfortunately, not all drivers meet this unspoken duty. When drivers are careless on the road, they put themselves and other drivers in danger and may even cause fatal collisions.
