CHARLES COUNTY, MD — Driver Killed After Vehicle Becomes Trapped Beneath Tractor-Trailer

5 stars

CHARLES COUNTY, MD (July 16, 2025) — A driver was killed Tuesday, July 15 when their vehicle became trapped beneath a UPS tractor-trailer at a major intersection in Newburg, Charles County, Maryland, authorities said.

The fatal crash occurred around 2:40 p.m. at the intersection of Crain Highway (U.S. Route 301) and Rock Point Road. According to emergency dispatch records, the vehicle ran underneath the trailer of the semi-truck, resulting in heavy entrapment and fatal injuries.

Emergency personnel arriving on the scene found the car lodged under the trailer. Medics determined the driver was deceased by 2:51 p.m., and the incident was designated a “Priority 4” fatality. Tactical command operations were ended shortly afterward.

Units from Rescue Engine 14, multiple medic teams, and command staff responded to the scene. Crews remained on-site for more than an hour to secure the area and assist with the investigation. The traumatic nature of the incident prompted the activation of a Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) team to provide support to first responders.

The identity of the deceased has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin. No other injuries were reported from the crash.

Crain Highway northbound at Rock Point Road was closed for several hours as law enforcement and crash reconstruction specialists examined the scene. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Underride Crashes in the DC Area

Underride crashes, where a smaller vehicle slides beneath a larger commercial truck, are among the most deadly types of motor vehicle accidents. These crashes often result in catastrophic injuries or fatalities due to the severe damage to the passenger compartment of the smaller vehicle.

Understanding the common causes of underride crashes can help raise awareness about these preventable tragedies:

  • Sudden Stops: When tractor-trailers slow down or stop suddenly, following vehicles may not have sufficient time to react and avoid sliding underneath the trailer.
  • Inadequate Rear Guards: Many commercial trucks lack proper underride guards, or have guards that fail to prevent smaller vehicles from sliding beneath the trailer.
  • Poor Visibility: Large trucks can obstruct the view of traffic conditions ahead, making it difficult for drivers to anticipate sudden changes in traffic flow.
  • Distracted Driving: Drivers who are texting, talking on phones, or otherwise distracted may fail to notice when traffic ahead is slowing or stopping.
  • Following Too Closely: Tailgating reduces reaction time and increases the likelihood of rear-end collisions with commercial vehicles.
  • Speed Differential: When trucks are traveling significantly slower than surrounding traffic, the risk of rear-end collisions increases.
  • Weather Conditions: Rain, fog, or other adverse weather conditions can reduce visibility and increase stopping distances.

The intersection of Crain Highway (U.S. Route 301) and Rock Point Road is a busy area in Charles County that sees regular commercial truck traffic. This particular intersection has experienced multiple serious accidents over the years, highlighting the ongoing safety challenges at this location.

Maryland’s Truck Accident Laws

When fatal underride crashes occur in Maryland, surviving family members may be entitled to pursue wrongful death claims under Maryland law. These cases often involve multiple parties, including the truck driver, trucking company, and potentially the manufacturer of the truck or trailer.

Federal regulations require commercial trucks to have rear underride guards, but these safety devices often fail to prevent fatal crashes. When inadequate safety equipment contributes to a crash, it can form the basis for product liability claims against truck manufacturers.

Trucking companies have a responsibility to properly maintain their vehicles, train their drivers, and ensure compliance with federal safety regulations. When these responsibilities are not met, companies can be held liable for resulting accidents.

Navigating the aftermath of a fatal underride crash requires specialized legal knowledge. These cases involve complex federal trucking regulations, accident reconstruction, and often multiple insurance companies working to minimize their exposure.
