Washington, DC – Six People Injured After MetroBus Crashes Into Building

5 stars

WASHINGTON, DC (March 3, 2025) – Six people were injured when a MetroBus crashed into a building in Northeast DC on February 28.

According to news reports, Metro Transit Police and DC Fire and EMS were called to the scene at the 1000 block of Bunker Hill Road NE at 10 Street NE in Northeast DC. Officials say the bus had run off the road and hit the columns of the building. The bus stopped short before contacting the building, coming to rest at the steps leading to the entrance.

At least six people were taken to the hospital following the accident to be treated for injuries.

It is not clear what caused the accident, and the building did not sustain structural damage. Police are investigating.

Bus Accidents in Washington, DC

As part of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) system, MetroBuses serve hundreds of thousands of passengers daily throughout the District, Maryland, and Virginia. When bus accidents occur, they often result in complex legal situations due to the involvement of a governmental entity.

WMATA operates under specific legal protections that can complicate personal injury claims. Unlike typical motor vehicle accidents, claims against MetroBus must adhere to strict notice requirements and shortened statutes of limitations. Injured parties typically have only six months to file a formal notice of claim with WMATA before pursuing a lawsuit, compared to the standard three-year statute of limitations for most personal injury cases in DC.

The “common carrier” status of MetroBus means they’re held to a higher standard of care than ordinary drivers. Bus operators must exercise the highest degree of care and vigilance for the safety of their passengers. This heightened duty can be advantageous for injury claims, as it places a greater burden on WMATA to prove they weren’t negligent. However, proving liability still requires establishing that the bus operator breached this duty of care and that this breach directly caused the injuries sustained.

Compensation in MetroBus accident cases may cover medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other damages. However, damage caps and governmental immunity provisions can limit recovery in certain circumstances. For these reasons, those injured in MetroBus accidents often benefit from specialized legal representation familiar with the nuances of claims against public transit authorities in the DC metropolitan area.
