A pedestrian was fatally struck by a vehicle on the Capital Beltway in the early morning hours of December 10. According to news reports, Maryland State Police responded to the crash site on the inner loop of I-495 East near University Boulevard around 3:30 a.m. A preliminary investigation found a Ford vehicle struck a person walking on the highway. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Ford remained at the crash site and is cooperating with authorities. Several lanes on the inner loop were temporarily closed for investigation but reopened around 7:30 a.m., causing significant delays during the morning commute.
Even though pedestrian accidents have seen a decrease in Maryland over the last few years, fatalities are still very high. According to the Maryland Department of Transportation, 91 percent of pedestrian-involved crashes in the state in 2021 resulted in either an injury or death. Most pedestrian accidents occur in the fall scene — 38% of all pedestrian crashes occurred between September and December.
