Multiple People Injured in Six-Vehicle Crash in Montgomery County, MD

5 stars

A major car accident involving six vehicles on Interstate 270 in Montgomery County, Maryland, left multiple people injured and forced a complete shutdown of northbound lanes for over two hours, authorities said.

The crash occurred on December 21 between Watkins Mill Road and Middlebrook Road, just north of exit 12, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS). Emergency crews responding to the scene transported at least four people to local hospitals. The extent of their injuries was not immediately disclosed.

The incident, which was reported shortly before 2 p.m., prompted officials to close all northbound lanes of I-270 approaching Exit 13.

The cause of the multi-vehicle collision remains under investigation.

How Often Do Multi-Vehicle Accidents Occur?

According to a recent study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), multi-vehicle accidents, also known as chain reaction accidents, result in more than 13,000 fatalities each year, accounting for more than 40% of all motor vehicle accidents. These accidents are more likely to result in a fatality than a single-car or two-car crash. These accidents often occur on highways and major roadways and are usually the result of poor weather conditions.

If you were involved in a multi-vehicle accident, your first concern should be your safety and the safety of anyone else in the vehicle. Check for injuries and move to safety, if you can. Call 911 right away and start getting contact information from everyone involved. Do not admit fault or even apologize for the accident to anyone.

It’s also in your best interest to speak with an auto accident attorney as soon as possible. Multi-vehicle crashes can be difficult since multiple people may be responsible. It can be difficult to untangle what occurred and who may be held at fault.
