Game Day Food Safety Tips

5 stars

The Super Bowl may be over, but the threat of bacteria in your game day food is far from gone! The buffet, potluck-style format of gatherings during big sports events can be a breeding ground for germs and illnesses. Proper food safety is key to staying safe during your next game day. Follow these tips for a stress-free sports party!

Always Practice Cleanliness

Not paying enough attention to cleanliness can lead to the spread of bacteria in game day food. You don’t want to share the dip with someone who doesn’t wash their hands! Always remember to properly clean your hands, tools, and food products before handling or cooking your game day snacks.

  • Always wash your hands with soap and running water before eating, preparing, or touching food. In addition, make sure to wash your hands after you use the bathroom or touch your pets.

  • If you are using fresh fruits and vegetables in your game day dishes, make sure to wash them under running water beforehand. You should wash all of your produce, even if you do not plan on eating the peel.

  • Make sure to wash your kitchen tools with hot, soapy water before cooking and after preparation. This washing should include countertops, dishes, and utensils.

Hit the Right Temperatures

Undercooked food can be full of unpleasant germs that can cause food poisoning. Always make sure to cook your food to the proper temperature before eating. You can purchase a food thermometer to ensure that you hit the right number.

  • All poultry items should reach a minimum temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • All beef items should reach 160 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • You should follow all cooking instructions on the package when cooking food in the microwave.

Keep it safe during game day and practice good hygiene and cooking instructions when making your halftime snacks. Have you or a loved one suffered injuries due to negligent game day food poisoning?
