Police: Woman Rescued From Underneath Red Line Metro Train

5 stars

According to Washington, DC fire officials, a woman was taken to the hospital with serious injuries after being rescued from underneath a Metro Red Line train on December 15. News reports state that just after 9 p.m., the DC Fire and EMS Department posted on their X account that someone was trapped underneath a Metro train at the Gallery Place—Chinatown Metro Station.

Firefighters rescued the woman from beneath the train and transported her to a local hospital with critical injuries.

There are no details about how the woman ended up on the tracks; however, Metrorail called the woman a “trespasser” who was struck by the train. Trains between Farragut North and Judiciary Square had stopped running after the incident.

How Often Do Metro Accidents Occur in DC?

Metro accidents like the one that happened last weekend are relatively rare, given the volume of passengers. However, there are several notable incidents have occurred, such as the infamous Red Line crash in 2009 and the 2015 smoke incident at the L’Enfant Plaza. The most common types of incidents involving the DC Metro include:

  • Smoke and fire incidents
  • Minor derailments
  • Door malfunctions
  • Escalator malfunctions

Following any type of Metro accident, it’s important to speak with an experienced DC Metro accident lawyer right away. These types of cases are extremely complex since they involve dealing with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA). Special guidelines, such as tight deadlines and special filing requirements, must be followed for a successful claim.

Evidence also needs to be preserved quickly following a Metro accident. Surveillance footage, maintenance records, operator records, and witness statements must be collected as soon as possible to prove your case.

Multiple liable parties may also play a part in your accident. Not only the WMATA, but other passengers, contractors, WMATA employees, and equipment manufacturers may all have played a part in the accident.
