Commonly Confusing Driving Situations: How to Handle Them the Right Way

5 stars

The open road can be a confusing place. Unfortunately, many of the most perplexing circumstances behind the wheel are rarely discussed in driver’s training. These issues are even more likely to be ignored later on, leaving baffled drivers to muddle their way through potentially dangerous situations. Below, we highlight a few especially confusing scenarios — and how they can be handled appropriately.

Traffic Circles

Roundabouts are supposed to make roads safer, but drivers confused about basic navigation can prompt their fair share of fender benders. When in doubt, treat lane selection as you would in a typical multi-lane intersection. Select your lane early and avoid changing course while in the roundabout.

Zipper Merges

Zipper merges allow drivers to use multiple lanes until the road narrows to just one lane — at which point, they alternate to shift into the open lane in an orderly manner. This approach is best used when traffic prompts slower speeds.

Simultaneously Reaching a Four-Way Stop

Without the guidance of lights, intersections can quickly become confusing. This is especially true for busy four-way stops, where multiple people may arrive at the exact same time. Ultimately, it all comes down to basic rules regarding right of way. Assuming multiple people reach the four-way stop at the same time, the driver on the left should yield to drivers on the right. Signals are essential, as drivers headed straight enjoy right of way over those intending to turn.

You do your part to respect the rules of the road — and you expect other drivers to do the same. Unfortunately, negligence is all too common on local roads.
