A new consumer product recall highlights the risks of exercise balls. Even while exercising to improve health and fitness, it is important to be aware of the risks associated with the equipment and to ensure that the equipment is safe and used properly.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a recall of fitness balls manufactured by EB Brands of Yonkers, New York and sold under the brand names Bally Total Fitness, Everlast, Valeo and Body Fit Fitness Balls. The full recall notice can be found here.  Approximately three million balls are affected by the recall and were sold between May 2000 and February 2009 at department and fitness stores throughout the United States. The fitness balls were determined to pose a risk from overinflation which was causing them to burst without warning during use, thereby tossing the exerciser to the ground. The manufacturer is offering purchasers new instructions on how to safely inflate the ball and can be contacted at www.ebbrands.com.
