Lack of Consumer Response to Recalls Leaves Children and Adults Vulnerable to Injuries | DC Metro Area Personal Injury Law Blog

5 stars

NewsInferno.com reports that although product recalls are considered to be a powerful way to ensure consumer safety, sometimes recalls are just not enough.  Despite recall notices and warnings, consumers continue to use products that have the potential to seriously injure or kill, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

The CPSC is charged with protecting the public from unreasonable risks of serious injury or death from more than 15,000 types of consumer products.  Information on over 4,000 product recalls and recall alerts can be found on the CPSC’s product recall website.  Information on numerous other recalls and product warnings can be found at Recalls.gov and Safe Kids USA.

While information concerning product recalls is made widely available, the problem is that it is up to consumers to learn about the recall and act accordingly.  Statistics indicate that only 15% to 30% of consumers actually respond to recalls and over two-thirds of all recalled products go unaccounted for, leaving children and adults vulnerable to injuries.  Aside from the fact that many alerts go unnoticed, consumers are just do not want to deal with the paperwork, repackaging, and mailing involved with most recalls.

Although it is difficult to stay current on all the recalls of products used in the home and elsewhere, consumers are urged to stay on the lookout for warnings and alerts.  For a list of the CPSC’s most current recalls and product safety news, see here.
