According to a recent report, Food and Drug Administration lab analyses identified undeclared sibutramine in 34 dietary supplement products distributed by Universal ABC Beauty Supply.
Product packaging on these dietary supplements were not labeled as containing the drug. Sibutramine, an FDA-approved drug used as an appetite suppressant for weight loss, has not been approved for use in dietary supplements and has been found to substantially increase blood pressure and pulse rate in some consumers. Patients are advised to consult with health care professionals before use of the drug. Sibutramine also presents risks for patients with a history of coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, arrhythmias or stroke.
For a full list of the recalled dietary supplements visit the April 20, 2009 press release. Health care professionals and consumers may report adverse reactions to the use of these products to the FDA’s Medwatch Adverse Event Reporting program. Further information about this program can be obtained on the FDA’s website.
