Several canned products from Castleberry’s Food Company may be contaminated with Botulism, and are being voluntarily recalled, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Following is a list of affected products:
Potentially contaminated cans have “best by” dates of April 30, 2009 through May 22, 2009 imprinted on their lids. The source of the contamination is currently under investigation. Consumers who have purchased an affected product, or any product with an illegible “best by” date are instructed to throw it away.
Consumers with recall-related questions can call the FDA at 1-888-SAFEFOOD, or can contact Castleberry Food Company representatives Jamie Leicht or Fleishman Hillard at 1-888-203-8446.
The FDA warns that the symptoms of Botulism do not always appear immediately and could be delayed by as much as two weeks. Common symptoms include double vision, blurred vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, dry mouth, and muscle weakness that moves progressively down the body, affecting the shoulders first then descending to the upper arms, lower arms, thighs and calves. Botulism can also cause paralysis of the breathing muscles and result in death unless assistance with breathing (mechanical ventilation) is provided.
