The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that roughly 3,500 people drown each year in non-boating related accidents. Drownings can occur in swimming pools, spas, lakes and other bodies of water. There are multiple ways you could reduce the risk of a drowning accident this summer.
Provide supervision. If you are a parent, the American Red Cross recommends supervising your children while they are swimming. Only adults should supervise children. However, supervision is also important for adults. According to the American Red Cross, you should use the buddy system (swimming with another person) instead of swimming alone.
Ensure your family knows how to swim. The American Red Cross recommends ensuring that your children and other family members know how to swim. Swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning.
Learn CPR. You can enroll in courses to receive a CPR certification. In the event someone drowns, CPR can save his or her life. You can find CPR courses in your area on the American Heart Association’s website.
Set safety rules. You can set safety rules for your family. For instance, you could tell your children to stay away from drains. The American Red Cross also recommends banning “breath holding contest” games and other dangerous activities.
Avoid alcohol use. Alcohol intoxication is a common reason why people drown each year. The American Red Cross recommends cutting alcohol use while enjoying recreational water activities.
Install barriers. If you have a private swimming pool, then you should ensure that it is properly secured by a locked gate or other barrier. An alarm can also help prevent unauthorized access of your pool.
Use safety equipment. Pools should have proper safety equipment, such as a lifesaver. If you are going to a lake or other body of water, then the American Red Cross recommends using life jackets.
