Virginia Traffic Accidents Decreased Over Thanksgiving – Will the Trend Continue Through the Christmas Holidays? | DC Metro Area

5 stars

The Thanksgiving week is often the deadliest for drivers across America. In 2010, Thanksgiving Day saw 431 deaths nationally from traffic accidents, and the number of traffic accidents spikes during the holidays every year. This past Thanksgiving in Virginia, however, we collectively received a reprieve from the typically deadly time of year. From Wednesday until Sunday over Thanksgiving, there were only five fatal traffic accidents reported throughout the state – a record low in over two decades. Last year saw twelve fatal accidents, and the last time there were only five traffic deaths over Thanksgiving weekend was in 1992.

The five deaths happened in the cities of Virginia Beach, Radford and in Middlesex, Bedford, and Roanoke counties. Of the victims, one was 25 years old, one was 60 years old, and three had not been wearing seatbelts. Two of the crashes involved alcohol. Police officers and emergency responders expressed gratitude for the low number of accidents and little loss of life, but without the police force’s efforts throughout the weekend, that number could have been much higher.

Virginia State Police troopers participate in a national effort to increase their presence and visibility on holidays and holiday weekends, and troopers nationwide make a large number of traffic stops in an effort to keep drivers safe.

Officers stopped 9,789 drivers for speeding in Virginia over Thanksgiving weekend and stopped 2,313 for reckless driving. Police officers also issued roughly 900 tickets to drivers not wearing seat belts, and stopped and arrested 90 drivers for DUI. 1,191 Virginia traffic accidents were reported to police during this time period, and officers helped 3,404 drivers in some manner.

Law enforcement officers hope that this trend of fewer fatalities will continue into the Christmas and New Year’s Holidays, which see just as much travel as Thanksgiving and potentially even more alcohol-related driving behavior.
